Newsletters: they can be a very effective tool for promoting your Village and increasing engagement with your members and your broader community, but they can also be a significant burden to create and maintain, often requiring specialized skills and resources not readily available to most Villages. The challenge of how to create and publish effective, attractive, and compelling newsletters with a reasonable amount of effort has come up frequently in conversations with the User Group over the last year. This seems like a good time to see what Villages can learn from each other.

Our February 21 User Talk will be another “Why We Do Things the Way We Do” session. Our topic is How do Villages develop, create, edit, publish, distribute, and archive their Newsletters.  Rather than a scripted presentation, this will be a discussion among the attendees about how their Village creates and publishes their newsletter: what tools they use, how they acquire and manage content, what standards guide the process, and how they publish and archive issues (print, digital or hybrid). So please come prepared to share your experiences, successes, along with your challenges and how you have resolved them.  We expect that the attendees will learn best practices and new ideas that they can apply to their Village’s efforts.

The focus of the User Talk will go beyond CE/RMV features. While most Villages use some CE/RMV capabilities to support their newsletters, many use other tools as well. We are interested in what external tools you find most effective as well as how you integrate their use with CE/RMV capabilities and what your overall workflow looks like.

Please bring your questions, ideas, and success stories. Here are some examples of Village newsletters to stimulate the discussion:

  • Ashby Village (CA) uses Constant Contact.

  • Village of Takoma Park – creates and posts a PDF

These monthly talks are designed to help Villages use RunMyVillage and other technology more effectively.  Each month has a different topic.  The intended audience includes the technology community within your Village.  In addition, others in your Village may be interested based on the planned topic.  Each User Talk has time for attendees to ask RunMyVillage-related questions to RMV and to other Villages. Our Why We Do sessions do not have presentations but are a chance for attendees to explore ideas that might be useful to their Village by having conversations with their peers in other Villages.   Examples of what we plan for these talks: RMV new release updates and discussions, results of surveys of desired enhancements sent to RMV, discussion of best practices and common issues particularly where Villages use RMV in different ways, and orientations for new Villages.

If you have ideas for topics, email us at RMVusers@vtvnetwork.org.  Videos for all previous User Talk webinars are on the VtV website.
